Being happy and at peace with my body is much more gratifying then landing some of these jobs.
Being a Hollywood stuntwoman sounds pretty amazing, right? Jumping off buildings, driving fast cars, fighting the bad guy or being one, getting tossed around like a rag doll, and crashing through windows. Yeah, it’s pretty awesome, I’m not going to lie, it also isn’t easy. It takes lots of training to do what I do. Scratches, bruises, a few head bangs and muscle pain all comes with it at the end of the day. What’s the hardest part you ask? Staying in shape and the pressure to be thin just so that you can double multiple actresses. Let’s face it; most of the leading ladies in Hollywood are THIN. Do you know how hard it is for someone like me that has an athletic background with muscles to become skinny? It is really hard – bar none! If I don’t workout and lose all my muscles, which is mainly in my legs, how can I take a fall to “concrete” in a short skirt and tank top with little to no room for pads and get up and do it again? Honestly, I couldn’t. I’ve been told I was “too big” to double certain actresses. My response back was, I’m not big -I have muscles, and I workout and that actress doesn’t do either! TRUTH! To be honest, I said to myself a few years back “I am tired of trying to be f*#king skinny and wanna start doubling actresses that are freaking normal!” Then came my call to double Ivana Milicevic on Banshee. Not only is she a stunning lady, she has the perfect body that any stuntwoman would like to double… Normal! When I say normal, I mean not super skinny and just enough muscles without looking manly! That made me so happy, finally an actress that doesn’t need a sandwich (or 2) and me not having to do a crash diet. I was tired of yo- yo dieting to be “thin” just for the sake of work. This business can create body morphic issues for sure. Now don’t get me wrong, just because I was doubling Ivana didn’t mean I could slack off and do whatever I wanted, I still needed to train to make her action look good. This woman is the best thing that’s ever happened to me in my career! She gave me confidence in myself, believed in my abilities, and constantly cared about my well-being. Oh, and not to mention, but I will, she said I had a nice ass! My hard work to stay healthy and not skinny finally paid off. I still double other actresses that are very thin and with the action being fast, you wouldn’t be able to notice the size difference at all. I’ve told a few Stunt Coordinators that I can’t double some ladies and I won’t miss meals so that I can. Being happy and at peace with my body is much more gratifying then landing some of these silly jobs.
See my point is, you can have the best of both “body” worlds and still work. ☺
